The 'Alternative Cardio' That Everyone Loves!

The vast majority of people hate doing cardio. By ‘cardio’ I mean traditional cardiovascular exercise such as running, cycling, etc. What if there was an alternative cardio you could do, that would give you all the great cardiovascular benefits without the pain!

Boxing! In all my years of personal training I cannot remember someone not enjoying boxing. It gives you are the fat burning, cardiovascular benefits that running or cycling does. It is a great stress release, and when done properly highly effective and burning fat from all parts of the body.

There are 2 options if you want to do boxing from home. You either hang a punchbag up, in your garden or garage. This way you can work-out on your own without needing anyone else’s help. Or if you live with or know someone who wants to take it up with you, just buy a pair of boxing pads and take it in turns to hold them for each other.

Boxing can be as technical or simple as you like. But to get you started, simply stand front on to the pads/punchbag with your arms up at shoulder height, and alternately swing them into the pads. Make sure you keep your wrists straight and keep your thumbs out of the way. Try boxing for sets of 1 minute and resting in between.

Today’s Takeaway – Cardio does not have to be long and boring. give boxing a go!

3 Foods That Wil Kill Your Diet

When trying to lose weight there are some foods that will do your efforts more damage than others. There are some foods that no matter how good you are the rest of the time or how much exercise you do, will lead to you failing to lose weight. They will kill you diet. So what are they?

These 3 foods are not necessarily the foods that are most fattening. They are the foods that I have found clients slip up with time and time again, and drastically reduce their weight loss results. In my experience if someone cuts down on, or even better cuts out the following 3 foods, their fat loss results rocket.

1/ Bread

Som many people eat far too much bread. And the thing is, it’s not due to its wonderful flavour and taste. Bread is bread, right? But it’s because it’s easy and convenient. Get rid of the bread and have a salad with more protein and more veg instead. So much healthier, and just as nice.

2/ Chocolate

Admittedly this is more of a sacrifice food. Some people just love chocolate. The problem is a lot of it is very high in fat and sugar, and highly processed. Taking this into your body will slow down any weight loss attempt. If you must have it, try to have the dark chocolate that is unrefined and less sugary.

3/ Biscuits

Biscuits are so deadly, because they contain so much fat and calories for something so small. Just having a couple of biscuits could contain the same calories as a substantial, healthy lunch. So try to choose a healthier, more filling snack.

Today’s Takeaway – Bread, chocolate and biscuits are killer foods, so avoid them or at least minimize them for maximum fat loss results.

Inner/Outer Thigh Flab – The Answer

Especially for ladies the inner and outer thigh is a common area for accumulating fat, and therefore a key area to target whilst exercising. It’s an area that many people can never seem to shift the fat from. So why is this and what can you do?

The machine you see above is the ‘abductor machine’ commonly seen in gyms. Along with its partner, the ’adductor machine’ these two machines are the tools most people choose to sculpt their inner and outer thighs.

These two machines are quite literally the last things you should be using to burn inner/outer thigh fat. In fact I would go so far as to say there are the most useless piece of fitness equipment you ar ever likely to come across, and if I had by way they would all be removed from gyms and destroyed!

Okay maybe that’s a bit OTT. But they really aren’t very effective. They give a ‘burn’ sensation which gives the illusion they are working the muscles hard. Don’t be fooled by this. The amount of muscle fibres the machines actually engage is tiny. You could spend all day doing the exercise and not get any results.

You are far, far better off doing some compound leg exercises, such as squats, split squats and lunges.  You are engaging literally a hundred times more muscles fibres.

Try doing squats with different width of stance. For example do narrow squats, even with a tennis ball or something between your thighs to really work the inner thighs.

Or try 3 way lunges. So do a front lunge, a side lunge, and a transverse lunge in sequence. This way you with hit all the muscle fibres on the inner and outer thighs (as well as many others!)

Today’s Takeaway - Don’t get sucked in by useless gym machines. More often than not they are not… Read more->

Jennifer Aniston's Workout Regime

At 41 years of age, there is no doubt that Jennifer Aniston’s body and figure are the envy of many women half her age. So what does she do to stay in such incredible shape?

A lot of people use the excuse of ‘lack of time’ for not exercising. Whilst working on her latest film Jen reported began her workout at 3am to fit it in before she had to be on set at 5am.

The reason I mention this is because a lot of people think that it’s easy for celebs to stay slim, as they have millions to spend on personal trainers and all the time in the world to exercise.

So if Jennifer Aniston can get up super-early to exercise you can too, no matter how busy you are!

Jennifer’s workout regime is a mixture of intensive weights/resistance workouts and yoga.

The resistance workout consist of weights exercises such as chest press and shoulder press. She combines these with bodyweight exercises such as squats and press-ups. She does them in a circuit format, i.e. one after the other with minimal rest, to give her the best workout in the shortest time.

She also reportedly has a private yoga instructor. This will certainly help with her flexibility as well as her mental attitude towards the exercise.

I must confess that although yoga works really well for a lot of people and does have a great range of benefits. I personally don’t believe it’s a great fat burner. The resistance/weights part of Jen’s workout regime will be what keeps her so slim.

Today’s Takeaway – Even stars like Jennifer Aniston have to work hard to make time in their busy day for exercise. You must too.
