This is the headline I came across yesterday on the yahoo news page; ‘Man Loses Weight Eating Sugary Snacks.’ Apparently some guy has lost 3 stones (24 pounds) by going on a diet on cakes, biscuits and sweets. How did he do it?
This guy decided he wanted to prove that if you went on a calorie restricted diet, it doesn’t matter what you eat you will still lose weight. And he did, 24 pounds in 10 weeks.
But what does this actually show? Does it show a fantastic new breakthrough in nutrition? No.
What is shows is; if you are overweight and don’t eat healthily in the first place you can lose weight by drastically reducing your calories.
He cut his calories to 1800 per day. Which is a reasonable number, and wouldn’t leave you feeling unfulfilled or hungry; if you were eating healthy low calorie foods that is!
A cupcake is about 500 calories, so that gives you an idea of how little this guy was actually eating to keep to the 1800 calories a day limit. He must have been starving!
Hardly a sustainable weight loss plan is it? Not to mention the fact that there would have been virtually no protein in the diet, which in the long-term would lead to a reduction in lean muscle mass and a slower metabolism.
Experiments and headlines like this prove the rubbish and nonsense the media portray about weight loss. You can bet there will be people that read that headline and think it sounds like a great idea.
And the best part of all is this guy is a nutritionist! Would you pay him for a session? Any nutritionist that has got enough excess weight to comfortably lose 24 pounds clearly wasn’t ‘Mr Slim’ in the first place was he?
Today’s Takeaway – Please don’t buy into media hype like this. It is totally unsustainable and will never work in the long term.
