A lot of confusion is still out there when it comes to cardio, i.e ‘aerobic exercise.’ In past articles I have stated that you do not need to do traditional cardio in order to burn fat and lose weight. But what exactly does that mean?
Firstly, lets clear up what I mean by the term ‘traditional cardio.’ I mean the sorts of things you would do in a gym, i.e. running, cycling, cross training, etc. These are the activities you DO NOT need to do.
Why? Let’s clarify exactly what cardio means. It’s basically getting your heart-rate up to a higher level and keeping it there. Nothing more, nothing less.
If you have ever tried one of my home/circuit training workouts, I’m sure you will agree you most definitely achieve this objective. And I can assure you there is no traditional cardio in them whatsoever.
It’s important to understand I am NOT saying cardio in itself is not necessary. It’s just the monotonous, traditional forms of cardio that we can avoid.
Today’s Takeaway – If you can implement the right exercises in the right format, you will see great fat loss results. Compared to this method of training, traditional cardio is both outdated and ineffective.

So many people I work with are taking totally the wrong approach to fat loss and getting lean physiques.
Cardio, cardio and more cardio seems to be the answer for most people. But in reality building lean muscle is the number 1 most important factor in anyone’s fat loss journey.
The more lean muscle you have the faster you metabolism works and the quicker you burn fat. It’s really is that simple! Muscle burns fat super-efficiently.
But please don’t think building lean muscle means you are going to have great big muscles and look like bodybuilders. YOU WON’T! This won’t happen ladies, please believe me when I say that.
Doing weights in the gym is one way of achieving this, but by no means the only way. You can do resistance exercises at home without any equipment whatsoever that will build lean muscle. Search the site and click the link at he bottom of the page for examples of how.
Today’s Takeaway – Building Lean Muscle = Fat Loss. Simple.

It’s really important to understand the reasons behind choosing to do a particular form of exercise. Today I will compare and contrast the benefits of cardio to resistance training. Which one or what combination is right for you?

By cardiovascular exercise I mean stuff like jogging, cycling, cross trainer and such like. By resistance exercise I mean stuff like free weight and bodyweight exercises.
Both forms of exercise train the heart to become stronger and healthier. Both forms also burn calories and therefore promote fat loss. But resistance exercise has the following advantages over cardio;
1/ Resistance training strengthens your muscles and bones. Not only will this help your body cope with the daily stresses of life, but it will put you in a stronger, better position to burn fat and lose weight.
2/ Resistance training stimulates your body’s metabolism and fat burning hormones. This means you will be burning fat after and between you workouts, rather than just during your workout with cardio.
Today’s Takeaway – Resistance exercise will produce a lot better results than cardio – fact. So this should form the basis for your workouts and fat loss regime.

Again and again people ask me ;’Do I need to do cardio?’; ‘What sort of cardio should I be doing?’ I will reveal all today…

NO YOU DON’T. I spend so much time trying to drum this into people. Traditional cardio can be a useful addition to your workout, but it is definitely not a necessity. Most people do not believe this when I tell them. But if they trust me, and try my methods (which can be found using the right hand column) they soon become believers!
The benefits of cardiovascular or aerobic exercise come from getting your heat-rate up to a certain level and keeping it there. It does not matter how you do it. And if you have ever tried one on my ’5 minute workouts’ i’m sure you will agree this definitely happens.
So why do traditional cardio such as the treadmill or cross trainer, when you can get all the same benefits, plus many more, and in a fraction of the time with simple circuit training? It just doesn’t make sense.
But I totally understand you will be dubious about this. That’s fine, but all I can say is, as Personal Trainer I have gotten fantastic fat loss results time and time again with no traditional cardio whatsoever. So please you the right hand column and give the FREE Workouts a go!
Today’s Takeaway- Traditional Cardio is old news. Circuit training will get you the fat loss results you crave.
